B1108 - SOLD

This is a fabulous large antique French print on canvas dating from the 19th Century. It is after Murillo's 'The Immaculate Conception of Los Venerables'. It is large and decorative and would certainly add an authentic finishing touch to a château chic interior.

The original 'Immaculate Conception of Los Venerables' was painted by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo in Spain in 1678. The painting was looted by Marshal Jean -de -Dieu Soult in 1813 and was taken to France. It was bought by the Louvre in 1852 and it was after this that the print was made, possibly by the Louvre itself.

In the painting the Virgin is dressed in blue and white, her hands crossed over her bosom and her gaze directed at the heavens as she stands on the moon. She is in a celestial space filled with light, clouds and angels. The scene is utterly charming. It has 'd'apres Murillo' written in the bottom left hand corner.

The print is mounted on canvas. We have left it as we found it as a rolled canvas. Over the years it has darkened a little and the edges have become a little scuffed. There is also a little cracking to the print where it has been rolled. In our opinion this just adds to the atmospheric character of this gorgeous old piece.

It measures :- 172 cm (5 ft 7.75 inches) high x 100 cm (3 ft 3.5 inches) wide.

This fabulous religious print is from a carefully selected collection of gorgeous antique French decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe'.
