This is a huge, impressive vintage French tapestry wall hanging. It has a medieval design inspired by the 16th Century tapestries in the Cluny Museum in Paris. This tapestry certainly encapsulates the essence of the originals and would look superb whether hung in a country house home or a hyper modern apartment.
The tapestry is very heavy, it weighs nearly 5.5 kg, and is possibly interlined. It would certainly aid insulation in a chilly room.
It depicts the outdoor life of an aristocrat & his servants. They are in a beautiful landscape covered in a profusion of flowers (millefleurs) and trees among which little birds, rabbits and deer can be seen. In the background are two magnificent castles.
The nobleman and his men are respledent in vibrant pink & red costumes. The reds, pinks, blues & greens of the flowers, trees and costumes look stunning against the dark bluey / black of the background.
Around the edge of the tapestry is sewn a fabulous deep border of roses, flowers and leaves. The overall effect is breathtaking!
The tapestry is woven in wool & linen. It is very heavy, hangs perfectly and is in excellent vintage condition. It is lined on the back. The lining has some fading and there is a little wear in places at the top where possibly rings were once sewn.
The tapestry measures :- 220 cm (7 ft 2.5 inches) wide x 138 cm (4 ft 6.25 inches ) high.
A fantastic large wall hanging tapestry to add an authentic château chic statement to a room and another divine vintage French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
N.B. We have used clips to display the tapestry & these are not included.
