B1632 - Gorgeous Antique French Red Velvet Benitier, Jesus Porcelain Plaque Napoleon IIIThis is a gorgeous antique French bénitier dating from the Napoleon III era C 1860. It is an exceptional example of it's type and is very decorative and architectural. It is made of wood and is covered in red velvet and edged with leather. In the centre of this is a pierced repoussé cross with a holy water stoop. In the centre of the cross is a dome shaped porcelain plaque bearing the image of Jesus wearing his crown of thorns - just stunning! There is a metal loop on the back for hanging purposes. The benitier is in good antique condition. The velvet has worn a little with the passage of time and the gilding at the bottom of the interior of the stoop has mellowed. There is some scuffing to the back of the piece but none of this detracts from it's beauty. The bénitier measures :- 28 cm (11 inches) high x 19.5 cm (7.75 inches) wide x 7 cm (2.75 inches) deep. This beautiful bénitier is from a carefully selected collection of gorgeous antique French religious & decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe'.
