This is a gorgeous antique French curtain pelmet dating from about 1900. It is made of moiré silk and has been exquisitely hand painted with flowers. It would be fabulous incorporated into a number of interior projects - perhaps as a frame for a door or as a ciel de lit above a bed.
The moiré silk is in a fabulous shade of champagne. It is hand painted with flag irises and peonies in gorgeous shades of pink, lilac and cerise with touches of yellow. The style in which the flowers and their accompanying foliage have been painted is fabulous. The paint has been applied with bold brushstrokes and the resultant effect is breathtaking.
The pelmet is trimmed with passementerie in shades of red, pink, ochre and sage green. That to the top of the pelmet is narrow braid but that to the inner edges is wonderful bobble passementerie. Just two of the bobbles are missing and you have to search to notice this. The pelmet is lined on the reverse with glazed cotton.
The pelmet is in good antique condition with no damage to the textile. There are some age spots and one or two water marks (see pics.) but these blend in and do not draw the eye. In fact they add to the character of this rare and gorgeous piece of antique French textile.
The pelmet measures :- W 140 cm (4 ft 7 inches) x H 116 cm (3 ft 9.75 inches)
A divine pelmet to add a château chic finishing touch and another superb antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe.
