B1608 - SOLD

This is an amazing large panel of rare antique French Savonnerie carpet dating from the 1800's. It is full of timeworn charm and would add a truly authentic finishing touch to a vintage home.

These carpets were made in pieces which were then sewn together. This panel is made from 4 pieces which are sewn vertically. It is bound by brown tape to 3 sides.

The carpet is made from tufted wool onto a hessian back. It is light in weight compared to modern carpet and could perhaps be used for upholstery projects.

The pattern is an absolutely gorgeous design of floral vignettes in vibrant pinks and blues with touches of brown on a beige background. It has an antique look that could not be replicated.

The carpet has timeworn over the years with grace and has obviously been much loved as it does have repairs and patches (please see photos). There are one or two splits (about 4 cm long) and some wear to the pile in places. On the reverse of the carpet there are some marks on the hessian but these do not show through. It has not been cleaned. In our opinion however these characteristics do not detract from the beauty or useability of the carpet and it is eminently suitable for light weight traffic perhaps in a bedroom.

The carpet measures :- 256 cm (8ft 4.75 inches) wide x 415 cm (13 ft 7.5 inches) long.

A fantastic panel of antique carpet to add an authentic shabby chic statement to a room and another divine antique French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
