This is a beautiful antique French lace pelmet dating from the 1800's. It would originally have been used as a decorative addition to a mantlepiece but could now be used as a pelmet or, as our photographs show, a gorgeous shawl.

The pelmet is embroidered with silk on a tulle background and is trimmed with a gorgeous heavy silk lace passementerie with long silk tassels.

The tulle is a lovely shade of old cream and the two tone silk embroidery is in a lovely shade of fresh cream and an old tea rose. The lace passementerie is cream to match the embroidery. The tassels are long and plumptious and have frothed to perfection over the years.

The combination of the soft tulle and the heavy silk tassels allows the pelmet to hang and drape beautifully.

The pelmet has neatly sewn seams at the 'shoulders' where it would have gone around the corners of the mantlepiece. It is in good condition with just one very faint oval shape mark the colour of tea which you would have to search to find.

We have measured the pelmet as if it is hanging on a mantlepiece and it is 152 cm (60 inches) wide. The tulle is 21 cm (8.25 inches) deep and the tassels are 17 cm (6.75 inches) long.

This is a fabulous piece of antique French lace to use as an interiors finishing touch or to add a touch of glamour to an outfit.

Another divine antique French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
