B1287 - SOLD

This superb antique French cast iron plaque is both architectural and historical. It is dated ' 4 SETEMBRE 1870 REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE' and commemorates when Léon  Gambetta proclaimed the beginning of the French Third Republic after the capture of French Emperor Napoleon III by German armies during the Franco- Prussian War.

In the centre of the plaque is Marianne, the national personification of the French Republic since the Revolution, as a personification of liberty, equality, fraternity and reason, and as a portrayal of the Goddess of Liberty. Above and below her is the plaque's title.

Marianne is framed to either side by a stunning cornucopia of fruit above each of which a laurel leaf garland extends to meet in the middle. At the base of the plaque is a beautiful bow with ribbon tails.

The plaque has it's original green paint now gently peeling to perfection with the passage of time. The plaque is substantial and sturdy.

It measures :- W 32.5 cm (12.75 inches) x H 29.5 cms (11.5 inches).

A superb mount with history to enhance an architectural display. It is from a carefully selected collection of gorgeous antique French decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe'.
