B1823 - Superb Vintage French Printed Linen 'Tapestry' Wall Hanging, 18th C Society Scenes

This is a superb vintage French printed linen wall hanging with just about everything going for it! It dates from the mid 20th Century but depicts two 18th Century society scenes with a medieval tapestry influence.

The scene at the top of the wall hanging depicts two ladies out for a stroll with their dogs. They are being paid court to by a nobleman with his magnificent steed. All around them is a plethora of millefleur and there are two exotic trees and birds.

Below this is a band of swirls and curls among which are charming cherubs playing musical instruments.

The second scene covering the bottom half of the wall hanging is set outside a fabulous château. A couple are descending a set of stone steps and there are two other couples, one to the left and one to the right. One gets the feeling that they may be attending a ball as they are all particularly finely dressed, see the ladies' fans and the gentlemens' swords. At the base of this scene is a basket of flowers tied with a ribbon and once again we have the trees, dogs and birds.

The attention to detail in the printing is astonishing and is enhanced by the items in the design being outlined with chain stitch in a metallic thread which gives the wall hanging a 3 dimensional quality.

The colours are rich tones of pink, green, blue and ochre.

All of this splendour is trimmed with a metallic passementerie in a rich old gold. There are 4 tabs at the top to take a batten. The back of the wall hanging is lined.

The wall hanging is in good vintage condition and measures :- 64 cm (25.25 inches) high not including the tabs x 58 cm (22.8 inches) wide. The tabs are 4 cm (1.6 inches) high.
