B448 - SOLD

This is a superb vintage French metal wine advertising sign dating from about 1950.

It is entitled 'Grands Vins de Bourgogne' and is advertising J. MOMMESSIN, Macon wine.

J. Mommessin was founded in 1865 and is still exporting fine wines today.

In the top left hand corner of the sign is the emblem of the Abbey of Cluny - the Key of Saint Peter - which became the enduring symbol of the Mommessin winery.

The scene is set in a very atmospheric wine cellar. The bottles of wine are stacked against the wall and a very old bottle of wine sits on a barrel with a burning candle and full glass beside it.

The back of the sign is cardboard and there is a chain for hanging.

It would make an authentic period display piece to hang on a wall, perhaps in a kitchen or in a bar.

The sign measures :-  H 31.5 cm (12.3 inches) x W 23.5 cm (9.25 inches)

Another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe that can be seen in our shop in Frome, Somerset.
