B1958 - Superb Antique French Church Altar Cross / Crucifix, Glass Base, Praying Angels

This is a superb antique French church cross / crucifix dating from the 19th Century. It would originally have stood on a church altar and would now make a stylish architectural addition to a reflective niche.

The cross is beautifully fashioned in gilded spelter. To either side is a gorgeous winged angel kneeling in prayer.

Beneath the angels are vines and grapes and to the tips of the cross are vine leaves.

The cross stands on a decorative gilded brass and glass base.

The cross is sturdy. It has had one or two minor knocks over the years which do not detract.  The gilding has mellowed over the years to a dark old gold hue.

It measures :- 33 cm (13 inches) high x 7.25 cm (2.8 inches) diameter across the base.

A superb religious piece to display and use and another divine antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe!
