B790 - SOLD

This is an amazing antique French chocolate box dating from the 1800's. It came from the chocolatier and confiseur F. Marquis in Paris and would have been filled with delicacies and bought as a gift, perhaps for a beau. It is now itself the most divine confection and would make a gorgeous boudoir box.

It is covered in silk in a sublime shade of pink. The lid and front of the box are decorated in divine rose ribbonwork, handworked in exquisite detail. The roses are in shades of pink softer than that of the silk and their foliage has many shades of green. Their stems are embroidered with golds and greens. As if this wasn't enough there are also sublime pale blue ribbon bows holding the sprigs together. A trim of rosebud passementerie around the base of the box completes the ensemble.

There is a little loop and tassel that hooks on to a toggle to hold the lid shut.

The lid lifts up on two silk hinges to reveal a yellow silk interior. Gold embossed on the underside of the lid is 'F. MARQUIS, Passage des Panoramas 59 Rue Vivienne 44 PARIS'.

The box has timeworn gracefully over the years. There is some wear to the silk and the interior shows a little sign of use as one would expect but this does not detract from it's charm and beauty. The box is sturdy and suitable for use for years to come.

It measures :- 38 cm (15 inches) long x 15 cm (6 inches) deep x 8 cm (3 inches) high.

A gorgeous timeworn box to use and enjoy and another divine antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe.
