B2160 - Impressive Huge Vintage French Tapestry Wall Hanging 17th Century Hunting Scene

This is an impressive large vintage French tapestry wall hanging with a 17th Century hunting scene. It dates from the early to mid 1900's. It is very atmospheric and would be the perfect château chic finishing touch to a country house interior.

It depicts a stunning scene of noblemen and women at a hunt. They are riding fine steeds and are accompanied by their huntsmen and dogs.

They are superbly attired and are surrounded by a profusion of trees and lush vegetation.

The scene is framed by a beautiful border of flowers and berries.

The colours are subtle shades of greens, browns, ochres and aubergine with highlights of red in the costumes.

The tapestry is woven in cotton. It is very thick and heavy, weighing approx 4.5 kg. It has a padded appearance which gives relief and definition to the subject matter. 

The tapestry does show characteristics of age. There are some marks along the top edge where it was once attached to a batten and there is evidence that it was once stapled to a batten along the border at the bottom (please see photos). The colours have faded and darkened with the passage of time. The original colour of the tapestry can be seen in an area of about 30 cm (12 inches) up from the bottom where, one presumes, that it may have been tucked behind a sofa or other piece of furniture. The tapestry has not been dry cleaned.

The tapestry measures :- 206 cm (6 ft 9.1 inches) wide x 195 cm (6 ft 4.7 inches) high.
