This is an impressive antique French pelmet / ciel de lit / bed  canopy dating from about 1900.

It would have been hung above a bed to create a decorative centre piece from which to hang drapes. It is over 5 ft wide so it would also make a gorgeous pelmet above a window.

It has a gilded repoussé metal frame with twisted ribbon detail. In the centre is a gorgeous ormolu shell and laurel leaf garland crest.

The ormolu crest is cast in exquisite detail and the gilding is lustrous. The repoussé metal has a lovely old gold hue.

Wthin the metal frame is a wooden frame and it is to this that the drapes would be attached.

The ciel de lit is sturdy and measures :- W 162.5 cm (64 inches) x D 33.5 cm (13.25 inches) x H 10 cm (4 inches).

This is a divine bed canopy to add an authentic château chic finishing touch to a boudoir and another fabulous antique French find from La Belle Étoffe!
