B1030 - SOLD

This is a gorgeous antique French bènitier dating from the 1800's. It is stunningly decorative and very architectural.

It is made in the shape of a cross from elm wood in a rich, dark hue. At the centre of the frame is a porcelain oval with the image of  Mary and Jesus beautifully handpainted in glorious colour and detail. Mary clasps her child to her. She is dressed in a green shawl and has a grey plaid mantle. Her robe has rich red sleeves and a dark blue skirt against which the rosy cheeked, chubby Holy Child snuggles.

Around the porcelain oval, pointing to the extremes of the cross is the most gorgeous intricate filigree work with scrolls and curls entwined with tiny flowers and leaves. The metal has a fabulous dark bronze colour.

At the base of the cross is the holy water stoup. This is made of ormolu and is also very decorative with an elaborate acanthus leaf design. The ormolu has mellowed over the years to a lovely old gold.

On the back of the bènitier is a loop for hanging and the retailers label.

The bènitier is in good antique condition. Years of cleaning has mellowed the varnish on the wood but this just adds character to this lovely old piece.

It measures :- 28.5 cm (11.25 inches) high x 21.5 cm (8.5 inches) wide.

A fabulous religious piece to display and use and another divine antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe!
