This is a spectacular antique French tapestry château curtain / wall hanging / portière dating from the 19th Century. It is a feast for the eyes and would add an authentic château chic statement to a room.

It depicts a sublime 18th Century rural scene full of contentment. The design is dominated by a magnificent tree to the left hand side, under which, in the foreground, is a group of 2 young women and a man with the accoutrements for a picnic.

In the background a farmer calmly ploughs his land and another tends his sheep. See the 2 boys climbing the tree! One is already high up trying to reach the bird's nest.

The tapestry has a narrow border, with a picture frame design, to 3 sides.

The colours are soft browns and beiges with a touch of ochre, and pinks and burgundy in the costumes.

The tapestry is woven in wool and linen. It is hemmed along the bottom and the right hand side as one looks at it. The other edge could also be hemmed or left as it is, as it is stable. We have hung the top from clips which are not included.

The textile is in good antique condition with no holes or wear. There appears to be a flaw above the man in foreground's head (see photos) but this does not draw the eye or detract from the beauty of the tapestry.

It measures:- 290 cm (9 ft 6 inches) long x 122 cm (4 ft) wide.

A fabulous portière / curtain / wall hanging to add an authentic château chic statement and another divine period French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.

N.B. We have photographed the portière between a fantastic pair of antique tapestry curtains which we will be listing in our other items.
