This is a fabulous pair of antique French tapestry château curtains dating from the 19th Century. They are a feast for the eyes and are of superb quality. They would certainly add an authentic château chic finishing touch to a room.
The tops of the curtains are made from a sumptuous rich dark brown cotton velvet and are beautifully embroidered with a contrasting beige thread. From the scalloped edges of the velvet panels the most breathtaking tapestry falls away in a cascade of flowers and fruits in subtle shades of brown and green. Around each tapestry panel is a border. The tapestry textile is in fantastic antique condition.
At the top of each curtain are 6 pleats, each formed by the attachment of a large wooden ring. There is also a fabric tab which originally would have been tied to the end of the curtain pole but which we have tied to an extra ring (not included) for display purposes. The velvet on the right hand curtain as one looks at it is a little faded at the meeting edge.
On turning the curtains around we can see that one curtain is beautifully lined with it's original lining in excellent condition. The other curtain is similarly lined but this has perished a little with time and someone has cut a rectangle from it. We have left it as we found it. The lining could be left as it is, it could be completely removed or it could be replaced - it would make no difference to the hang of the curtain as the tapestry textile is so heavy.
Each curtain measures:- 320 cm (10 ft 6 inches) long x 97 cm (3 feet 2 inches) wide at the top and 119 cm (3 ft 11 inches) across the bottom.
The external diameter of each curtain ring is 11 cm (4.25 inches).
This is a fabulous pair of antique French curtains to add an authentic château chic statement to the grandest of homes and another divine period French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
