This is a gorgeous vintage French tapestry wall hanging dating from the early to mid 1900's. It would add a fabulous château chic finishing touch to a room and make a fantastic bed head.

It depicts an idyllic romantic 18th Century château garden scene inspired by the gardens of Marie Antoinette's Petit Trianon in the grounds of the palace of Versailles. All the characters are happy and relaxed and it is a joy to behold.

The garden appears to be on an island and water cascades from a fountain adorned with adorable cherubs. The garden is very beautiful with a profusion of  flowers, lush vegetation and trees.

Within this idyllic scene are two lovely young couples and a single maiden. The boys tease their girls while the single maiden looks on wistfully. One of the girls has a dog and the other a little sheep. All look relaxed and happy. The girls wear beautiful 18th century gowns with tight bodices and full skirts.

The colours of the tapestry are very subtle. The greens of the vegetation are highlighted with the pinks and blues of the flowers, water and costumes. In the foreground shades of ochres dominate the palette.

Around this glorious scene is sewn a gorgeous border. The border has a design to resemble a gilded frame entwined with beautiful roses.

The tapestry is made of wool and linen and is in good vintage condition. There are one or two subtle marks (please see photos) but these blend into the design and do not draw the eye.

On the back of the top edge are loops for hanging purposes. There are some tiny tack holes in the textile of the very edges of the sides and bottom where the tapestry was probably once attached to a frame. Once again these do not draw the eye and in our opinion the tapestry is ready to hang in a period home where any characteristics of age are celebrated.

The tapestry measures :- 188 cm (6ft 2 inches) wide x 105 cm (3ft 5.25 inches) high.
