B1073 - SOLD

This amazing antique French hand painted silk pelmet dates from the 19th Century and would originally have come from a church. It would now make a breathtaking addition to an interiors project perhaps as a pelmet over a bed or a pair of curtains in a salon.

It is made of silk and along it's whole length it is handpainted with the most gorgeous profusion of wild flowers and grasses. Here we have convolvulus, daisies, cornflowers, wild roses and ears of corn. The colours are amazing - pinks, blues, reds, yellow and green which look superb against the cream silk background.

At the centre of the pelmet are 2 shields between which the letters H & S are entwined with a cross.

At the top of the pelmet is a gold metallic passementerie and the lower scalloped edge is adorned with a sumptuous gold metallic fringing. Wow!

The back of the pelmet is lined . The pelmet is in good antique condition. There are one or two water marks and a couple of nibbles to the silk (please see photos). Where there are some red painted flowers and just to the left of them are some vertical splits to the silk which are barely visible. We have photographed the entire length of the pelmet for close inspection.

The pelmet measures :- 246 cm (8 ft 1 inch) long x 23 cm (9 inches) wide + the fringing which is 3.5 cm (1.5 inches) long.

A fabulous unique hand painted pelmet to add a sumptuos finishing touch to a room and another rare antique French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
