This is a heavenly antique Italian ciel de lit / bed couronne or bed canopy dating from the 19th C. It would have hung above a bed to create a decorative centre piece from which to hang drapes.
It has a carved wood 'baroque' circular frame which is designed to hang from the ceiling. It is painted 'white' which contrasts beautifully against the gilded detail.
To the front is a stunning gorgeous gilded acanthus leaf crest and to either side of this are 2 more areas of acanthus leaf detail. The entire circumferance of the ciel de lit has scrolled and curled gilded detail to both edges.
Within the frame are the hooks which have been used over the years to hang the curtains. These could be removed and the curtains could be stapled directly onto the wood.
The ciel de lit is sturdy. There is a chip to the gilded wood on the left hand side of the crest and a surface crack but this does not go all the way through the wood. The gilding and paint have distressed and mellowed over the years but the ciel de lit is GORGEOUS just as is.
It measures :- W 55 cm (21.5 inches) x D 47 cm (18.5 inches) x H 21 cm (8.25 inches). It weighs fractionally over 1 kg and therefore shouldn't be too heavy for most ceilings.
This is a divine bed canopy to add an authentic château chic finishing touch to a boudoir. It is from a carefully selected collection of French & Italian decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe'.
