This is a beautiful large panel of 19th Century hand embroidered Chinese silk with birds & flowers. It is very decorative and would be divine hung in a boudoir, perhaps as a bed head.
The back ground colour is a lovely soft shade of tea rose. In the centre of the panel is a magnificent bird and around him a profusion of twigs burgeon upwards with a plethora of gorgeous roses, chrysanthemums and leaves. Another bird hovers above and there is a charming little butterfly in the bottom corner.
The colours are dreamy, soft, delicate shades of pastel pink, cream, taupe, aqua, lilac and green. The combination of the subject matter and the colours is absolutely heavenly.
Around 3 sides is a border in turquoise and purple. The reverse is lined with a tissue silk in a matching tea rose.
The panel is in good antique condition. There are 2 tiny areas of wear on the second twig from the left. These appear to come from the back and do not make a hole on the front textile. There is also a small mark just to the left of them (please see photos). These do not draw the eye or detract from the beauty of this gorgeous piece. The lining shows evidence of contact with moisture, not directly, but perhaps in the form of condensation, but once again, in our opinion, this does not detract.
The panel measures :- 175 cm (69 inches) wide x 54 cm (21.25 inches) high.
This is a truly beautiful antique embroidered panel. It is from a carefully selected collection of antique French textiles & decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe'.
