B1169 - SOLD
This is a superb vintage French tapestry wall hanging. It is woven in the Aubusson style and has a stunning medieval design inspired by the 16th Century tapestries in the Cluny Museum in Paris. This tapestry certainly encapsulates the essence of the originals and would look superb whether hung in a country house home or a hyper modern apartment.
The tapestry is of excellent quality. It is woven in wool and linen and is thick and plumptious. It is nice & heavy and hangs perfectly.
In the centre of the scene is a medieval nobleman astride a magnificent steed. He, and the surrounding area, are worked in linen to give fine detail. He is out hunting and has his sword drawn. His hunting dog has flushed out a duck which flies over his head.
Around him the tapestry is worked in sumptuous wool in stunning shades of green and ochre which gives the vegetation an amazing lushness. In the foreground are fabulous primroses & thistles (millefleur).
The tapestry has a border woven into the design. It has flowers in deep purples and pinks which look stunning against the dark greens of the background.
The tapestry is in excellent vintage condition. The top and bottom are formed by the selvedge of the tapestry. The very edges of the sides are not woven and could now be hemmed back. We have looked very hard and have found just one stitch, on the brown in the foreground, (please see photos) which may once have been pulled & trimmed but this does not form a hole.
The woven area of the tapestry measures :- 149 cm (4 ft 10.5 inches) wide x 101 cm (3 ft 3.75 inches ) high.
A fantastic wall hanging tapestry to add an authentic château chic statement to a room and another divine vintage French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
N.B. We have used clips to display the tapestry & these are not included.
