B1188 - SOLD

This is a gorgeous large antique French tapestry wall hanging dating from the early 1900's. The design is of an 18th Century aristocratic society meeting and is after one of the paintings of the Italian artist Marchetti (1853 - 1909). It truly would add a château chic finishing touch to a room.

The quality and attention to detail in the weave is quite exceptional.

The scene is set in a magnificent castle hall where the architectural details are absolutely stunning. In the background is a fireplace in front of which, rather bizarelly, is a fantastic knight on a horse!  This, quite rightly is being admired by two gentlemen. The 3 men and the lady in the foreground are engaged in conversation. They are fabulously dressed and the quality of the weave gives amazing texture to the costumes. See the gorgeous detail in the gentleman's pink coat.

The colours are muted shades with hints of pink, purple, lemon & coral in the costumes.

The tapestry is tightly woven in cotton but the texture and detail also suggest a silk content. The tapestry does have some characteristics of age. On the back are some dark storage marks. These have come through to the front in a couple of places and there are two watermarks (please see photos). Frankly these blend into the picture and could not possibly draw one's attention from the marvellous subject matter.

The  tapestry measures :- 175 cm (5 ft 9 inches) wide x 123 cm (4 ft 0.5 inches ) high.

A gorgeous wall hanging tapestry to add an authentic château chic statement and another divine antique French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.

N.B. We have used clips to display the tapestry & these are not included.
