B1276 - SOLD

This is a sublime large vintage French wall hanging. It has a medieval tapestry design printed on linen. It is entitled 'Travail de la Laine' and is after one of the 16th Century 'Noble Pastorale' tapestries in the Louvre in Paris. This version certainly captures the essence of the original and would look superb whether hung in a country house home or a hyper modern apartment.

The scene depicts the three phases in the process of wool manufacture. The central figure is the nobleman 'playing' at the task and to either side of him are his peasants engaged in the actual task. All around them are the tools of the process. The woman to the right is taking the wool from the sheep, the young man is winding the wool on a spool and the woman to the left is weaving it on a loom.

All around them is a plethora of millefleurs punctuated here and there with little birds and animals and touches of heraldry. Breathtaking!

The background colour is a deep midnight blue against which the corals, pinks and turquoises of the costumes look stunning.

The wall hanging has a hessian lining, is nice and heavy and hangs perfectly. On the back are some metal fixtures for hanging purposes. It is in excellent vintage condition, in fact it looks like it has never been used.

It measures :- 195 cm (6 ft 4.75 inches) wide x 140 cm (4 ft 7 inches ) high.

A fantastic large wall hanging to add an authentic château chic statement to a room and another superb vintage French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.

N.B. The clips from which we have hung the wallhanging are not included.
