This is a fabulous antique French glass casket dating from the 1800's. It originally would have been used as a pocket watch stand but would now also be perfect for displaying trinkets, perhaps in a shop window and would certainly add a château chic touch to a boudoir.
The casket is in the shape of an armoire and has a gorgeous repoussé laurel leaf wreath and ribbon tail crest. It stands on decorative repoussé feet. There is heavy bevelled glass to 4 sides. The glass door has a firm scrolled clasp.
The back of the interior of the armoire is covered in padded & buttoned silk in a sublime shade of pale blue now faded with the passage of time. There is a little gilded hook at the top of the back and this is where the watch would have hung.
The base of the interior is also glass. Beneath this is a little drawer, also lined with padded & buttoned silk, just perfect for a few rings and other bits of jewellery.
The armoire casket is sturdy. The gilding on the metal has mellowed to a rosy hue. The silk has faded but is in good antique condition. There is a nibble to the glass on the inside of the top left hand back corner. This does not extend to the exterior which is smooth and all is safe & secure.
The casket measures :- 20.5 cm (8 inches) high to the top of the crest x 11 cm (4.3 inches) wide x 8 cm (3.1 inches) deep.
A sublime glass casket to use and treasure and another superb antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe!
