B1340 - Superb Large Antique French Painted Mural Wall Hanging, After Paolo Veronese
This amazing large antique French painted mural / wall hanging is a version of 'The Finding of Moses', an oil on canvas by Paola Veronese (1528 -1588), now in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.
This later version certainly captures the atmospheric essence of the subject and enables us to have a tangible decorative piece to add an authentic château chic finishing touch to an interior.
It is painted on pliable canvas in beautiful pastel hues. It depicts the finding of Moses by Pharoah's daughter. She is sumptuously dressed in bejewelled 16th Century costume and wears a fabulous golden crown. The faces and costumes of the main characters are all beautifully detailed. See the folds of the textiles and the beautiful hooded eyes and aquiline noses of the Italianate faces.
The wall hanging is in good antique condition. It has cut edges and there are 3 vertical cuts in the bottom edge , the longest being 4 cm (1.5 inches). There is a 23 cm (9 inch) repair on the back of the canvas which shows through onto the pink tunic of the pike bearer in the bottom right hand corner. In our opinion this does not detract from the beauty of this lovely piece.
The wall hanging is too large to send out rolled so we would send it out carefully folded, we found that the folds dropped out after a day or two of hanging.
The wall hanging measures :- 238 cm (7 ft 9.75 inches) wide x 148 cm (4 ft 10.75 inches ) high.
A fantastic wall hanging to add an authentic château chic statement to a room and another divine vintage French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
N.B. We have used clips to display the wall hanging and these are not included.
