This is a spectacular pair of antique French château curtains in the Art Nouveau style dating from about 1900. They are a feast for the eyes and are of superb quality. They would certainly add an authentic château chic finishing touch to a room.
The curtains are made in a sumptuous regal red silk velvet which feels & looks absolutely divine. Each curtain has a deep embroidered border to the bottom and the outside edge in the Art Nouveau style. The embroidery is in crewel stitch in cotton & wool. It is in shades of green, beige and pink which looks superb against the red background.
The embroidery is in a stunning scrolled leaves and flower tendril design which burgeons up the curtains.
The lining of the curtains has been removed, probably because they had perished over the last century. In removing the linings the hems and edges of the curtains have been unpicked and may need to be rehemmed with or without a new lining as required.
The textile of the curtains is in amazing condition for it's age. There is some wear to the pile of the velvet at the tops of the curtains and there is a freckling of tiny wear spots across the curtains (please see photos) but nothing to draw the eye.
We have left the curtains as we found them. In our opinion they are clean and ready to hang in a period home where any characteristics of their age will be celebrated. They have not been dry cleaned.
Each curtain measures:- 260 cm (8 ft 6.5 inches) long x 127 cm (4 feet 2 inches) wide.
This is a fabulous pair of antique French curtains to add an authentic château chic statement to the grandest of homes and another divine period French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
N.B. We have used clips to display the curtains and these are not included.
