This is a spectacular pair of rare Chinese silk hand embroidered wall hangings dating from the mid 1800's. They would certainly make a stunning feature on a wall.
The wall hangings are almost mirror images of each other. The central silk panel is fantastically embroidered with a charming scene featuring a pair of pheasants. The male is perched on a gorgeous full blown chrysanthemum and his mate is below him on the grass. Above them beautiful tendrils of lotus blossom hang from an arched bough. The background colour of the silk is a sublime shade of champagne against which the vibrant red and turquoise of the male's plumage look stunning.
The central embroidered panel is bordered with silk brocade in a fabulous shade of ochre. The panel and it's border are mounted on paper. The wall hangings have their original weighted rollers.
The cords from which the wall hangings were originally hung have long gone but could be replaced as the fixings remain. We have used a piece of wire ( not included) to temporarily display the panels.
The stitchwork on the panels has been expertly executed. It is in good condition and is intact. The wall hangings have survived the years in good antique condition but as one would expect after 170 years or so they do show some characteristics of age. The paper lining has some age spots and these have come through to the silk in places. There is also a 4 cm (1.5 inch) split to the silk in the right hand panel (please see photos). These characteristics are minor and do not detract from the beauty of this extraordinary pair of handworked pieces.
Each wall hanging measures :- 162 cm (5 ft 3.75 inches) high x 59 cm (1 ft 11.25 inches) wide.
A truly beautiful pair of antique Chinese silk wall hangings. They are from a carefully selected collection of antique French sourced textiles & decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe'.
