B1484 - Sublime PAIR Antique French Hand Embroidered Silk Face Screens, Napoleon III
This is a sublime pair of antique French embroidered face screens dating from the Napoleon III era, C1860. They would originally have been used by a lady to protect her delicate complexion from the heat of the flames in a fireplace. They would now add a château chic finishing touch to a salon or boudoir, perhaps mounted on a wall.
Each has a round central panel covered in silk to both sides. The outer side is black and is finely embroidered in creams and ochres with a central floral motif with a scrolled leaf border and crest. The black silk has worn with the passage of time while still retaining the beauty of the embroidery. The silk of the inner side of the panel is plain cream. It has no wear but has, understandably , darkened with age.
The central panel has a black lightweight bentwood frame and a handle. The frame is adorned with a wavy lacquered rope effect which ends to either side of the handle with a filigree metal cap.
There is a cord edge to each circular embroidered panel which is finished with a bow at the base.
We have left the screens as we found them. The stitching holding one of the silk panels to it's frame has come adrift in places but could easily be repaired.
Each screen measures :- 45 cm (17.75 inches) high x 21.5 cm (8.5 inches) wide.
This is a gorgeous pair of embroidered face screens to add an authentic antique finishing touch to a room or to add to a collection and another divine antique French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
