B1485 - SOLD

This is an amazing antique French chocolate box dating from the 1800's. It came from the famous chocolatier and confiseur F. Marquis in Paris and would have been filled with delicacies and bought as a gift, perhaps for a beau. It is now itself the most divine confection and would make a gorgeous boudoir box.

The box is oval in shape. The lid and sides are covered in a gorgeous striped moiré silk in shades of green. The lid is exquisitely hand worked in embroidery and ribbonwork. It has a latticework design embroidered in gold metallic thread and bordered with ribbonwork  flowers and roses in delicious shades of pink. Around the edge of the lid is a gold metallic lace passementerie.

The lid lifts up to reveal a pink silk interior. The underside of the lid is gold embossed with 'F Marquis', Passage Des Panoramas, PARIS'.

The base of the box is trimmed with a metallic passementerie and the underside is lined with a green damask textile.

The box is in very good antique condition. The silk lining the interior vertical side of the box has a raw edge and has one or two cuts in it but this does not detract.

The box measures :- 23 cm (9 inches) wide x 17.5 cm (6.8 inches) deep x 5.5 cm (2.25 inches) high.

A rare and gorgeous collector's piece to use and enjoy and another divine antique French brocante find from La Belle Étoffe.
