B1510 - Exquisite Long Antique French Hand Painted Velvet Church Pelmet, Gold Fringing
This is an exquisite antique French hand painted church pelmet dating from the 19th Century. It would originally have been used to adorn a processional plinth holding a statue of Mary. The is one of the most beautiful and certainly one of the longest I have seen. It would now make a breathtaking addition to an interiors project perhaps as a pelmet around a bed.
The pelmet is made in a sumptuous silk velvet in a divine shade of champagne. The pelmet measures 3.80 M (12 ft 5.5 inches) long and along it's entire length it is hand painted with lilies and roses in gorgeous shades of coral, pink, yellow and green. The colours are still bright and beautiful even after all these years.
At the centre of the pelmet the letters H & S are entwined behind a cross. These are worked in gold sequins.
The bottom of the pelmet is trimmed with a fabulous gold metallic fringing. The reverse of the pelmet is lined with a gorgeous smooth silk satin.
The pelmet is in excellent antique condition. There are some pale age spots but these fade into the design, the fringing is coming a little adrift in one or two places and some of the sequins are missing. These are all very minor and do not detract in any way from the beauty of this gorgeous piece. We have photographed the entire length of the pelmet for close inspection.
The pelmet measures :- 380 cm cm (12 ft 5.5 inches) wide x 51.5 cm (20.25 inches) high including the fringing which is 5 cm (2 inches) and the top edge which is 4.5 cms (1.75 inches).
This is a fabulously unique hand painted pelmet to add a sumptuous finishing touch to a room. It is from a carefully selected collection of divine antique French textiles & decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe!
