B1530 - SOLD

This is an exceptional antique French religious diorama dating from the Napoleon III era C1860. It would make a lovely addition to a religious display perhaps grouped on a wall with others, or on it's own in a contemplative niche .

The diorama has a wooden oval frame which is covered with leather in rich dark hues. The frame encases the domed glass. Within this is an exquisite soapstone carving of  two beautiful winged angels holding a cross with the dove of peace. Their gowns flow around them and across their knees is draped a ribbon with the words 'JE CROIS EN DIEU' - 'I believe in God'. A tiny cherub looks up at them from the base of this charming scene.

The scene is carved in amazing detail - see the folds of their robes and the feathers on the wings. Each face is beautiful with very fine features. The luminous soapstone looks superb against the dark background.

The diorama is in very good antique condition. There is a loop on the back for hanging.

It measures :- 23 cm (9 inches) high x 16 cm (6.25 inches) wide.
