B1591 - SOLDThis is a sublime antique French chocolate / bon bon box. A date of 1st April 1937 is written inside but the appearance of the box indicates it to be much older - possibly the late 1800's. The inside of the lid is stamped with 'AU BÉBÉ GOURMAND ROUEN' and would originally have been filled with bon bons or chocolates, perhaps as a gift to celebrate the birth of a child. The box is made from heavy card. The lid has a gorgeous vignette of an 18th Century maiden carrying a baby in a flower filled basket on her head. The scene is depicted in atmospheric sepia shades and is trimmed with a wire passementerie now dulled to antique perfection with the passage of time. The sides of the box are covered with a fabulous rust coloured velvet and trimmed with further wire passementerie with glints of golden thread. The box is in very good antique condition and is sturdy. It would be perfect for a few love letters and keepsakes. It measures :- 26 cm (10.25 inches) wide x 19 cm (7.5 inches) deep x 6 cm (2.3 inches) high. A uniquely atmospheric box to add a touch of happiness to a boudoir and another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe! The accessories are for display purposes only.
