B1592 - SOLDThis is a superb vintage French woven tapestry wall hanging dating from the mid 20th Century. It's design is after the medieval tapestry 'L’art de la pesée et de la forge' currently in the Cluny Museum in Paris. This version certainly captures the essence of the original and would look superb whether hung in a country house home or a hyper modern apartment. The design is incredibly detailed. It shows two men in medieval costume. One has a set of scales and one is forging a metal bar on an anvil. Above them are the banners 'GHIOHARGIUS TROUVA L'ART DE PAISSER AUS POIS' and 'TUBALCAIN TROUVA L'ART DE FORGER EN TOUS METAULS' and celebrates the invention of weighing with weights and the forging of metals on an anvil. All around the men are lush trees and a profusion of millefleurs among which are birds, a little rabbit and a dog. The colours are atmospheric browns and ochres which look stunning against the black background. The tapestry is lined and hangs perfectly. On the back are some metal fixtures for hanging purposes. It is in good vintage condition with just a little fading to the lining. It measures :- 117 cm (3 ft 10 inches) high x 93 cm (3 ft 0.5 inches ) wide. A fantastic wall hanging to add an authentic château chic statement to a room and another divine vintage French textile find from La Belle Étoffe. N.B. We have used clips to display the wall hanging and these are not included. Please hover cursor over picture for magnified detail and click on picture for enlarged photo. SOLD
