B1634 - Fabulous Set 3 Vintage French Woven Tapestry Wall Hangings, Lady & The Unicorn

This is a fabulous set of 3 vintage French woven tapestry wall hangings. They are a representation of 3 of the 6 medieval Lady and The Unicorn Tapestries in the Cluny Museum in Paris. Here we have 'La Vue', 'Mon Seul Désir' & 'L' Ouïe'.

In each of the tapestries the Lady is standing in a circle of millefleur among which are little animals. To either side of her are a lion and a unicorn. The coat of arms of the Le Viste family are present in each scene.

Two of the tapestries represent the senses. 'La Vue' (sight) is symbolised by a mirror, and L'Ouïe (hearing) is symbolised by the musical organ. The other tapestry, 'Mon Seul Désir' (my only desire) is symbolised by the open casket held by the servant.

The original tapestries all had a red background but 2 of these are in muted tones which contrast beautifully with the pinky red of the other.

The tapestries are of excellent quality. They are woven in cotton in incredible detail and relief. They are each finished with a decorative border. They are lined and have tabs for hanging on a pole. They are in excellent vintage condition.

Each tapestry measures :- 62 cm (24.4 inches) high x 55 cm (21.6 inches) wide including the tabs. Each tab is 7 cm (2.75 inches) long.

A fantastic set of  wall hanging to make a statement and another divine vintage French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
