B1711 - PAIR Fabulous Antique French Pokerwork Pictures, 'L'adieu' & 'La rencontre' 1929This is a fabulous pair of antique French pokerwork pictures dated 1929 and signed A.M. They are oval in shape and are worked in a lightweight wood. The subject of both is a fabulously dressed pair of 18th Century lovers. One of the pieces is entitled 'L'adieu' and the other 'La rencontre'. In 'La rencontre' we see our masked beau visit his lady on her balcony. She offers him a rose. She is wearing a fantastic gown with a laced bodice and full skirt with large flowers with silver leaves. In 'L'adieu' we see our lovestruck lady leaning wistfully on her balustrade as her gorgeous beau bids her goodbye. The costumes are wonderfully defined with metal studwork. The colours are vibrant shades of orange, red and blue which look superb against the black of the night and the ochres of the vegetation. The paint is applied thickly to give texture and has in places distressed but this does not detract from the beauty of these 2 wonderful scenes. Each piece has 2 metal rings for hanging purposes. There is a repair to the wood on the back of 'La rencontre'. Each piece measures :- W 60 cm (23.6 inches ) x H 41 cm (16.1 inches). A delightful pair of pictures to add an atmospheric touch to a wall and another superb antique French find from La Belle Étoffe.
