B1724 - SOLD

This is a fabulous antique French château pelmet dating from the 19th Century. It would be divine over a window or a door and could perhaps be used over a bed. We also have another one, B1725, listed in our other items.

The pelmet is made in moiré taffeta and is embellished with 5 beautiful gold silk appliqué bows with long ribbontails. These are linked by gorgeous swags of embroidered gold silk flowers. Beneath this splendour is silk appliqué scrollwork.

The silk of the appliqué and embroidery has retained it's original vibrant gold shade which stands out and looks superb against the moiré background which has now faded to a subtle old gold. A glimpse of the original colour can be seen when we look at the back of the pelmet.

The bottom of the pelmet is shaped and has a gorgeous fringe and tassel passementerie trim. The top of the pelmet is straight and is also trimmed.

The pelmet is lined . There is a 19.5 cm (7.6 inch) turn back on each side and this could be unpicked to extend the length. In latter years a length of velcro has been sewn to the top back edge of the pelmet.

The pelmet is in general sound condition.  The silk appliqué has worn a little in places (please see photos) and the moiré has darkened. However we believe that the pelmet is ready to hang in a period home where the characteristics it has acquired over the last 100 + years will be celebrated. It has not been dry cleaned.

The pelmet measures :- W 173 cm (5 ft 8 inches) x H 45.5 cm (1 ft 6 inches) including the fringe.
