This is a divine antique French ciel de lit / bed couronne or bed canopy dating from about 1880. It is for hanging above a bed to create a decorative centre piece from which to hang drapes.

It has a decorative tubular brass frame to which are attached 4 gorgeous ormolu rose garland swags. The swags are secured at each end with a beautiful little rose embellishment. A stunning central rose garland and bow crest completes this wondrous confection. The roses and bows are cast in exquisite detail and the gilding has a fabulous antique hue with areas of verdigris.

The tubular frame has a beautiful acanthus leaf wall bracket to either end. The frame is attached to a sturdy inner frame made of wood. This is covered with a cotton textile and is backed with calico. There is a series of tiny hooks all round the wooden frame from which the original drapes would have been hung.

The ciel de lit is in good sturdy condition. As one would expect the textiles have discoloured over the years but are sound.

The ciel de lit measures :- W 76 cm (30 inches) x D 26.5 cm (10.5 inches) x H 28 cm (11 inches) from the bottom of the bracket to the top of the crest.

This is a divine bed canopy to add an authentic château chic finishing touch to a boudoir and another fabulous antique French find from La Belle Étoffe!
