B1778 - Magnificent Antique French Spelter Benitier, Virgin Mary & Jesus In Altar, 19th Century
This is a magnificent antique French benitier dating from the Napoleon III era C 1860. It is made in spelter mounted on wood covered in the most gorgeous red silk velvet. It is very three dimensional and architectural and would make a stunning statement piece.
Mary and the Baby Jesus on a plinth form the focal point of a fabulous altar. The altar has a central spire and an inner domed canopy with a winged cherub to either side. The altar is made in incredible detail with a myriad of architectural Gothic features.
Beneath Mary and Jesus is the holy water stoop which has a hinged lid.
The dramatic grey of the spelter looks superb against the red silk.
The benitier has a loop for hanging on a wall. It is in good antique condition.
It measures :- 45.5 cm ( 17.9 inches ) high x 20.75 cm (8.2 inches) wide x 8 cm (3.2 inches) deep.
