B1934 - SOLDThis is a fantastic antique French needlepoint church pelmet dating from the 19th Century. It would originally have been used to adorn a processional plinth holding a statue of Mary. The is one of the most beautiful I have seen. It would now make a breathtaking addition to an interiors project perhaps as a pelmet above a bed or a pair of curtains. The pelmet is hand worked in silk and wool in amazing colour and detail. To the centre are the letters JHS with a cross above. To either side of this are vignettes with purple grapes and pink roses alternating with sacred burning hearts. The vignettes are bordered in a stunning shade of dark red. The bottom of the pelmet is scalloped and is trimmed with fabulous gold wire fringing. The reverse of the pelmet is lined and the top has a tape which has some wear. The pelmet is in good antique condition. There is some wear, particularly to the silk above the letters (please see photos) but this does not detract in any way from the beauty of this antique piece. We have photographed the entire length of the pelmet for close inspection. The pelmet measures :- 250 cm (8 ft 2.4 inches) wide x 26 cm (10.2 inches) high including the fringing. This is a fabulously unique hand worked pelmet to add a sumptuous finishing touch to a room. It is from a carefully selected collection of divine antique French textiles & decorative pieces at 'La Belle Étoffe! N.B. The clips we have used to display the pelmet are not included.
