B2107 - Spectacular Pair Long Antique French Tapestry Chateau Curtains / Drapes, C1860

This is a truly spectacular pair of long antique French tapestry château curtains dating from the Napoleon III era C 1860.

The curtains have a dark champagne background. The design is in shades of brown and aubergine and has everything one could hope for on a château curtain.

Each curtain has a scrolled crest with swagged flower garlands. To either side of  this is a balustrade with a three dimensional appearance.

There is a scrolled border to both sides which finishes at the bottom with a stunning flourish.

Within the border to the centre of the curtain there are urns of flowers, scrolls, birds. griffins, butterflies, shells and flaming torches - just breathtaking!

The curtains are finished all round. There is a modern curtain tape.

The curtains are of good weight (each one weighing nearly 4 kg) and are in good antique condition, but not surprisingly, considering their age they do have some charcteristics :-

The right hand curtain has a small area of wear about the size of a Euro next to one of the griffins.There is a line of wear about 15 cm (6 inches) coming in from the right hand edge and some wear and fading along the bottom edge. There is a large darker area across the centre of the curtain.

The left hand curtain has some light wear down the centre 'seam' where the two halves of the panel have been woven together and two other areas of wear ( please see photos) which do not affect the overall splendour of this fabulous old textile. There are also a few subtle marks which blend into the design and do not draw the eye.

The curtains have not been dry cleaned but in our opinion are ready for use in a period home where the characteristics they have acquired over the last 150 + years will be celebrated.

Each curtain measures :-  337 cm (11 ft 0.75 inches) long x 130 cm (4 ft 3.2 inches) wide.
