B340 - Adorable Antique French Chocolate / Bon Bon Christening Favour Box, Denise, C1900

This is an adorable antique French chocolate / bon bon box dating from around 1900.

It would originally have been filled with confectionary - perhaps chocolates or sugared almonds. These boxes would have been given to the guests attending the christening of a baby as a keep sake of the day. In this instance the baby was Denise and her name is printed on the lid of the box.

The box is oval in shape and made of cardboard covered in paper. In the centre of the lid is a charming engraving of two women and a baby. This is beautifully detailed and is silvered. Around this is a gilded border and a stunning Art Nouveau design of gilded flag irises. At the top of the box is the gilded name 'Denise'. The gilding and silvering contrast beautifully with the cream back ground of the paper. The box is of exceptional quality and indicates that 'Denise' must have come from a rather wealthy family.

The paper around the edge of the lid is pleated and has the name of the chocalatière 'Warlop, Douai' gold embossed on it.

Inside the box is the original lacy paper doily. The box is in excellent condition with just a few marks on the doily where the confectionary sat.

The box measures 22 cm (8.5 inches) long x 11 cm (4.3 inches) deep x 2.25 cm (<1 inch) high.

This beautiful box would be stunning as part of a period French display and would be divine as a trinket or keep sake box in a château chic boudoir.
