B351 - SOLD

This is a superb antique French leather bound book entitled 'Les Seizes Codes' and dated 1835. It is timeworn to perfection and would make an interesting and decorative addition to any period French interiors display.

On the first few pages of the book are engravings of Louis Philippe I and Napoleon Bonaparte. Louis Philippe ruled France from 1830 to 1848 and this book is 'Les Seizes Codes' as instigated by Napoleon with 'Les Cinq Codes' during his reign 1804 to 1814. These were commissioned to codify criminal and commercial law and were, and still are today, very highly regarded.

The book is in sound condition with no pages falling out or breaks to the binding.

The spine is gold embossed and the book title and date is on a paper label which is gently curling to the edge.

The leather cover is timeworn, with nibbles to the edges and one small split to the right hand side of the spine. The edges of the wonderful old parchment-like pages are crêpey and there is the remnant of a marbling effect to the top edge. The overall effect is fabulous and could not be replcated.

The book measures 14 cm (5.5 inches) high x 9 cm (3.5 inches) wide x 5.5 cm (2.25 inches) thick.

This is a wonderful piece of French history to add an authentic timeworn touch to a period display.

Another divine period French find from La Belle Étoffe!
