This is a superb antique French spoon dating from the 1900's. It is highly decorative and has a Greek mythology theme.

The handle is Apollo in the classic pose of the Apollo Belvedere marble sculpture. He is depicted as a standing archer on a column. The arrow has just left his bow and the effort impressed on his musculature still lingers.

The bowl of the spoon depicts Helios, the sun god, riding the chariot of the sun to give light and heat to the world. The spoon is pierced to capture the effect of the flames and light coming from him and his 3 fiery steeds.

The bowl of the spoon is shield shaped. To both corners of the shield are magnificent rams' heads with great curling horns. From these, swags of laurel leaves ascend to either side of the column.

This is a fascinating spoon depicting in great detail these mythical scenes.

It measures:- 15.5 cm (6 inches) long x 8 cm (3.25 inches) wide.

Another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe!
