B420 - SOLD

This is a particularly fine pair of antique French ormolu church altar candlesticks. They date from the Napoleon III era C 1860.

They are tall and elegant and ooze faded grandeur and château opulence.

Each candlestick stands on a decorative triangular base with lion's feet. Acanthus leaf scrolls extend upwards from the feet to adorn the corners. Each of the sides of the base is intricately decorated with a religious image. One side has the Madonna, one side has Jesus Christ and the other has a double flaming sacred heart.

The column of each candlestick is of the classic Empire style and the bobeche are simple with clean lines.

The gilding on the ormolu has mellowed over the years to a soft old gold hue. It would polish further if required but looks superb as it is.

The candlesticks are in good condition. There is one tiny area of damage to the top of one of the candle holders. This is stable and does not detract from their beauty.

Each candlestick (not including the candle) measures :- H 52 cm (20.5 inches) x 11 cm (4.25 inches) along one of the sides of the base.

Whether placed on a simple country buffet or a grand enfilade these gorgeous candlesticks will look stunning.

They can be seen in our shop in Frome, Somerset.
