B552 - SOLDThis is a fantastic large panel of rare antique French Savonnerie carpet dating from the 1800's. It is of wonderful quality and the colours and condition are amazing. These carpets were made in pieces which were then sewn together. This panel is made from 4 pieces which are sewn across the width and could once have been part of a much larger château carpet. The panel has a cut edge at both ends and is bound with black tape down both sides. The carpet is made from tufted wool and has a hessian back. The pattern is an interconnecting matrix of hexagons of burgundy leaves on a beige and cream background. Within each hexagon are gorgeous posies of flowers and leaves in stunning vibrant shades of green, turquoise, orange, red, pink and purple. The condition of the carpet is exceptional. There are one or two tiny areas of wear (see pics) but you would really have to search to find them. The colours must be as vibrant as they were on the day it was made. On the reverse of the carpet there are some marks on the hessian but these do not show through. The panel measures :- 270 cm (8 ft 10 inches) long x 191.5 cm (6 ft 3 inches) wide. It would be fabulous on a floor but would also make an impressive curtain. A fantastic panel of antique carpet to add an authentic château chic statement to a room and another divine antique French textile find from La Belle Étoffe.
