B555 - SOLD

This is a sublime antique French religious banner dating from the 1800's. It would have been carried during religious processions and would now make a superbly decorative interior's piece.

All of the materials used to make the banner are of the highest quality. The front of the banner is made in a superb silk moiré taffeta in a gorgeous shade of oyster. Upon this is hand painted in fantastic detail an exquisite spray of roses. The painting of every petal and sepal is executed perfectly and the colours are gorgeous. The roses and buds are in soft shades of yellow, pink and peach, the leaves in fresh shades of green.

The roses frame the central Christogram JHS which is also beautifully painted in an old gold paint.

The sides of the banner are trimmed with a delicate gold passementerie and the scalloped base with a fringed passementerie in a soft old gold.

The back of the banner is lined with a fabulous fine silk in a shimmering shade of oyster.

The banner hangs from a pole which would originally have been held aloft on a staff during the procession. On either end of the pole is a wooden finial which has been fabulously water gilded to the highest standard. The pole has two metal loops for hanging.

The banner is in fantastic condition and would have been kept rolled up in the church between religious occasions.

The banner measures :- 80 cm (31.5 inches) long x 67.5 cm (26.5 inches) wide at the finials.

A gorgeous and rare religious banner to add an authentic finishing touch and another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe.
