B556 - Divine Antique French Toile De Jouy Portiere / Curtain, Pastoral Scenes, 19th C
This is a divine hand sewn antique French Toile de Jouy portière / curtain dating from the 1800's.
It is over 10 ft long and is made in Toile de Jouy linen printed with sublime pastoral scenes. It is lined with plain linen and is interlined. This makes for a very weighty curtain that would be perfect for keeping the draughts out.
The linen of the Toile de Jouy has a lovely crisp texture and drapes beautifully. It is a continuous length with no seams. It has a fresh antique white back ground and the design is printed in a lovely shade of deep pink now slightly faded with the passage of time. The design is full of delightful pastoral imagery. Each scene depicts peaceful family gatherings with children and animals amid a profusion of country produce and vegetation.
The curtain is clean and ready for use. The Toile has of course acquired some minor marks and tiny holes over the years but these do not detract and do not affect it's useability. The linen of the lining has a seam and also has some marks as one would expect in a textile of this age.
The curtain has tabs sewn on the top for tying it to a pole. If the curtain was not to be used for hanging it would provide masses of antique textile for projects. Both the printed Toile de Jouy linen and the plain linen of the lining could be used. The pattern repeat of the Toile is 93 cm (36.5 inches).
The curtain measures :- 320 cm (10 ft 6 inches) long x 93 cm (3 ft) wide.
A gorgeous antique French curtain to add an authentic château chic finishing touch and another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe.
