B606 - SOLD

This is a superb antique French Art Nouveau jug dating about 1900. It is signed by the sculpter J. Garnier (1853 - 1910) who was famous for such pieces which were usually made in bronze or spelter.

This jug is made from spelter and features all the natural sensual imagery we associate with the Art Nouveau style.

The body of the jug is formed by a botanical bulb with all it's surrounding scales and out of the centre of the bulb grows a shoot which arches forward to form the flared spout.

The handle of the jug is formed by a stunning reclining nude. She leans backwards with her arms behind her head, the arch of her body forming the curve of the handle. Around her legs billows a flimsy gauze but the rest of her remains as nature intended.

The spelter has mellowed over the years to a dark grey finish with areas of lighter patination which adds character to this wonderful old piece.

It measures :- 18 cm (7 inches) high

A gorgeous Art Nouveau jug perhaps to add to a collection and another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe!
