This is a fantastic antique French cretonne throw dating around 1850. It is a gorgeous item in itself and would look superb in a country house interior or the copious amount of fabric could be used for upholstery projects.
The cretonne is thick and heavy and drapes beautifully. The background is a gorgeous dark green with a dark turquoise floral design. Upon this background are 2 different floral vignettes in glorious shades of red, pink, russet, sage green and naturals. One has lillies and ferns and the other chrysanthemums and leaves. Both have 2 gorgeous little birds hovering above, one in vibrant shades of red and one in beautiful shades of blue.
The quality of the printing of the cretonne is such that the colours are almost as vibrant on the reverse of the textile as they are on the front.
The throw is hemmed all round and has a piece of passementerie sewn to the left hand side. The throw is made in 3 panels one 82 cm (32.25 inches), one 85 cm (33.5 inches) and one 36 cm (14.25 inches) wide.
The pattern repeat is 47 cm (18.5 inches).
The textile is in good general condition. There is one small tear approx. 2cm (< 1 inch) 26.5 cm (10.5 inches) up from the bottom of the central panel and one approx. 5 cm (2 inches) long in the bottom right hand corner. Both of these could easily be repaired.
The overall size of the throw is 203 cm (80 inches) wide x 196 cm (77 long).
This is a fabulous piece of period French textile to add an authentic château chic finishing touch to a home and another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe!
