B708 - SOLDThis is the most exquisite pair of antique French marble bookends dating from the 19th Century. They would certainly add a château chic finishing touch to an office or library. Sitting on a plinth on each marble base is the most gorgeous gilded cherub. Both are equally adorable with their chubby cheeks and legs and mass of curly hair. One of the cherubs has his head slightly more dipped than the other and he holds a book in his left hand and a small garland of fruit over his right arm. The other holds a scrolled parchment in his left hand and a large garland of fruit hangs over his right arm and falls down to his hip. The cherubs are made of spelter and are gilded. The plinth upon which they sit and their back rests are made of cast iron and are in a gorgeous shade of dark forest green. This tones with the green in the marble bases and contrasts beautifully with the dark mellowed gilding on the cherubs. The bookends are understandably weighty pieces and would be up to supporting some fairly hefty tomes. Each bookend measures :- approx. 19 cm (7.5 inches) high x 10 cm (4 inches) wide x 10 cm (4 inches) deep. A gorgeous pair of gilded cherub bookends to use and enjoy and another divine antique French find from La Belle Étoffe!
